Accоrding tо Freud, there аre internаl cоnflicts between three components of the personаlity structure.  The three components are: The [1], which operates according to the pleasure principle.  These are raw biological urges-- the things that a person wants immediately to satisfy primitive urges (like eating, sleeping, and using the bathroom). The [2], which operates according to the reality principle.  It is the portion of personality that makes decisions and tries the balance the needs of the two other personality components-- typically, by delaying pleasurable urges until it is socially appropriate methods can be found to satisfy them. The [3], which includes a person's morals of their society's view of "right" and "wrong" behaviors. This emerges between ages 3-5 years old.
