Fоr yоur first in-clаss writing аssignment, yоu will reаd, summarize, and briefly analyze a short literary piece. Please note that this essay is diagnostic in nature; in other words, it will show me what you know, and what you need to work on. As long as you turn in your best efforts, you will receive a passing grade on this assignment. You will also receive feedback! If you quote from the piece, please cite properly. Consider when this piece was published and that Kincaid was born and spent the early part of her life in Antigua when responding to the prompts below. Step 1: Read the Jamaica Kincaid piece “Girl.”  Take notes/highlight/mark the text as you read—look for the speaker’s attitude of what it means to be a woman, and note specific literary devices (symbol, metaphor, simile, etc.) that support those beliefs, and ideas that resonate with you in some way. Step 2: Complete Both Part 1 & 2:           Response part I. Write a one-two paragraph summary of the short piece. Include            the main ideas, written in your own words. Response part II. Write one-two paragraphs of response to the piece. Who is the speaker? To whom is this person speaking? What is the speaker saying about women’s roles? What is the speaker’s attitude toward the person being spoken to? How do you think this reflects the speaker’s attitude about themselves and their role(s)? Can you relate this work to the current time period in some way? You may also include any connections you made between the short piece and your own experience, or that of someone you know, if you can you share those ideas in a general way (without using “I” or “you” pronouns.) (Hint: What might Kincaid be trying to accomplish by writing this short piece?  Is this merely for entertainment or is there a deeper message or lesson to be learned?) MLA format page set up—Use a Proper MLA Heading: It should include your name, Date, Instructor Name and Course Title. Include a Works Cited entry for the poem at the end of your document. Cite it as a part of an online magazine article. Just do your best to remember how. I want to see what you remember. "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid
