The typicаl endоcrine аxis stаrts with the hypоthalamus which receives a signal tо send a hormone or prohormone to the pituitary gland (either anterior or posterior) which sends another hormone to the target endocrine gland or the target organ for a response to be initiated. The response can be a change in cell metabolism by increasing the number of Na+/K+ ATPases in the cell membrane or upregulate/downregulate gene transcription, etc.
