Assignment Assignment Review the 20 tоpics under “Essаy Tоpics” frоm pаges 355-356 of your textbook.  Then, select а topic to write a 3-5 page (at least 1000 words) essay that describes your topic but also makes an argument for why this event or thing has meaning for you.  Your essay should have a clearly stated thesis and support that thesis with solid evidence.   It is not enough to describe your topic but you must also decide what effects this noun (person, place, or thing depending on what you choose) has had on your life. In other words, proving these effects rather than just describing the event (that is not to say the descriptions aren’t important, but they should not be the focus).  You should rely on the skills that you learned in Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, and 16 of your textbook.   What To Write About The first thing that you should do when composing this essay is to think of some positive and negative effects that this topic has on your life.  The more details you brainstorm the more ideas you will have to draft with.  Once you brainstorm all sensory details and meanings you’ve associated with this topic and some of the impact it has on your life, work to organize your ideas in a way that makes sense to both you and your audience.  If you are comfortable, use the 5 paragraph essay format for this essay but if you have more to say you can certainly write more than 5 paragraphs (i.e., you can have more than 3 body paragraphs if necessary).  A basic (but very limited) outline might look like this: Paragraph 1: Introduction that illustrates the topic and has the thesis near the end Paragraph 2: Description of your topic Paragraph 3: First paragraph proving, with specific examples, why this topic has effected your life Paragraph 4: Second paragraph proving, with specific examples, why this topic has effected your life Paragraph 5: Thorough conclusion that puts a good final stamp on your essay Write a specific, but concise, description of your topic but spend the majority of the paper proving to the reader what the effect it has on your life.  Here are some tips for writing a concise description: Be selective with your detail Do not walk the reader through every aspect of the event (see appropriate detail on pages 349-350) Remember to keep the focus on the effects the topic has on your life and do not just describe it.
