Use the fоllоwing cаse scenаriо to аnswer the next five questions: A patient with a long-standing history of liver disease secondary to chronic alcohol consumption presents to the hepatologist office. Physical examination noted a stomach that appears bloated in nature, yellowing of the sclera of the eyes, low-grade fever, hepatosplenomegaly, tachycardia and a protrusion of the veins around the belly button. The patient notes they have experienced a worsening of their hemorrhoids and that the bloated abdomen and fever has come on rather recently. The bloated abdominal region is determined to be caused by a fluid accumulation in the peritoneal cavity. Blood samples and 50mL of the peritoneal fluid accumulation are collected and sent to the laboratory. Laboratory analysis reveals an elevated total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, AST, ALT, and GGT along with decreased Total Protein, Albumin, Fibrinogen, and Platelets. In addition, their BUN and Creatinine (kidney function markers) are increased. The peritoneal fluid culture grew E. coli.
