Biology Semester 1 Final Review

Trophic Level – The position of an organism in relation to the flow of energy and inorganic nutrients through an ecosystem (e.g., producer, consumer, and decomposer).
Biology – Science dealing with the study of living organisms
Flagellum – a motile structure of many free-living eukaryotic cells. Its core has a 9 + 2 array of microtubules. Typically long than cilia
manipulated variable – Independant Variable; the one thing that you are changing in the experiment
Nonpolar Covalent Bond – In molecules of only 1 element, the pull between them is equal.
Glycolysis – The first step in cellular respiration
compounds – made up of two or more elements in a fixed proportion
Two amino acids linked together make what? – Dipeptide
The following results were obtained after running a gel with a sample. Give a possible reason for each scenario and suggest what to do next. (6 points)  1) The gel is blank. No dye bands are seen on the gel and no bands show up under UV-light.   2) The amplification control has a band of the expected size, but neither the sample nor the sensitivity control has a band.  3) There is a band of the expected size in all lanes including the no template lane.
Homologous pairs – Chromosomes which have the same genes, shape and length.
flight feather – Large vaned feathers with interlocking rows or barbules.
Cell Wall – PLANT CELLS and SOME PROKARYOTES: a rigid layer of nonliving material that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms
Aves – the class composed of birds.
Eustachian tube – An air passage between the middle ear and throat of vertebrates that equalizes air pressure on either side of the eardrum.
translation – process by which mRNA is decoded and a protein is produced…

codominance – When neither allele completely masks the other, and both contribute to the phenotype.
