This essаy questiоn аddresses wаter pоtential in plants.  And nоt just in any plant, but a very special one: Sequoia sempervirens, the coastal redwood.  One particular coastal redwood living in California is about 1400 years-old and 379 feet tall, making it the tallest tree alive today. Like any other plant, a coastal redwood needs to get water from the ground up to its leaves.  In doing this it faces the same challenges as any other plant -- just to an extreme. Coastal redwoods' present natural range is limited to coastal central California and southern Oregon, but they are commonly used in landscaping elsewhere including all around Longview-Kelso!  In areas where redwoods thrive best, the soil is composed of very large particles and is nearly constantly wet with fresh rainwater, and the humidity in the air is high year-round. You will discuss the challenge of being a tree as tall as a redwood, by referring to Ψ - the free energy of water (or water potential).  Paragraph one:  Explain the main challenge for a 300+ foot tall plant trying to maintain a column of water from roots to leaves.  Briefly discuss the factors that could contribute to this problem. Paragraph two: Describe two conditions of the redwood’s environment (as explained above) that contribute to the tree’s ability to grow to its giant height.  Explain what would happen to the tree if it tried to “move” to a more arid environment with clay soil. Paragraph three: Describe two adaptations that allow the redwood to grow to such heights.  Remember that these adaptations should affect the Ψ inside the plant.  Also, discuss the tradeoff that the redwood is making by having these adaptations. Paragraph four:  Write a conclusion, briefly restating the problem with being a 300+ foot tall tree, how the tree overcomes the problem, and why it grows where it does.  This paragraph should summarize the rest of your essay, containing only the most important points.
