Fоllоw this format: Instructions and Rubric for the Visual Analysis MLA Format—Double-spaced MLA Heading in Correct Form for ALL Pages (last name and number of page) Correctly Punctuated Title: A Visual Analysis of … (what you are analyzing) Introduction: Hook the reader. Explain the hook. Give an overview of the visual, and provide the necessary context. Finally, as the last sentence of the introduction, state a blueprinted thesis statement. State the thesis statement by answering the two questions in only one sentence: What is the purpose/message of the visual? What devices/techniques does he or she use to relay the message? You want to prove that the visual has a certain meaning and uses certain techniques to achieve its purpose. Think about techniques used in advertisements like taglines, slogan, target audience, space, layout, color, symbols, visuals, etc... You can also discuss ethos, logos, and pathos if it applies. You want to explain what it means, how it works and explain how it brings out the message. Next, revise by saying if this was effective or not effective. Somewhere in the thesis or in the introduction include the author/artist/photographer and title if one exists. Thesis statement: The thesis should be evaluative and blueprinted. It should be only one sentence that answers the two questions. It is the last sentence of the introduction. What is the message? What devices are used? Example: In Fall of Icarus, Pieter Brueghel effectively utilizes color, lines, shapes, and subjects to say that when Icarus fell people went on with their daily lives like nothing significant happened. Body Paragraphs: Discuss the dominant devices and their function. Include a discussion of pathos, ethos, kairos, and logos appeals if they apply. You should also discuss other techniques. This is whatever applies to that particular visual genre. Follow the blueprinted thesis statement. Devices: Please note the devices depend on the type of visual. An advertisement might use a tagline or slogan, color, layout, size, target audience, symbolism, appeals, logos, ethos, pathos, testimonials, etc… Pick out a device, say what the device means, explain why it is important to convey the message. Always specifically refer to the visual. Use topic sentences and clincher sentences. Conclusion: Restate the thesis and/or explain what your analysis reveals about the text. Refer back to the introduction. Grammar and Mechanics No citations are necessary. Mechanics and Grammar do count. No first or second person pronouns, no contractions and no abbreviations.
