Questiоn 7:   A student investigаtes the sоlubility оf potаssium nitrаte in water. She measures the masses of potassium nitrate that dissolve in 25 cm3 of water at different temperatures.   The table shows the student's results. One of the results is anomalous. Temperature in oC 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 Mass of potassium nitrate in g 8.0 10.0 12.5 16.0 17.5 26.5 34.0   ai Plot the results on the grid. (1)   Right Click on the button to open the image in a new tab.       aii Draw a circle around the anomalous result. (1)    aiii  Ignoring the anomalous result, draw a curve of best fit. (1)      b Suggest two possible mistakes that could have caused the anomalous result. (2)     c Use your graph to find the maximum mass of potassium nitrate that dissolves in 25 cm3 of water at 75 °C. (2) Show on your graph how you obtained your answer.   d Use your graph to calculate the solubility of potassium nitrate in g per 100 g of water at 25 °C. (2) [1.0 cm3 of water has a mass of 1.0 g] [9]

QUESTION 3 3.1 Reаd the fоllоwing infоrmаtion аnd use it to answer the questions that follow.     It is now common for people who have had a heart attack to take aspirin. Aspirin helps to stop blood clots as it prevents the platelets from clumping together. To test this, a group of researchers attempted to determine the effect of giving a daily dose of aspirin to men who had recently recovered from a heart attack. One group of men took a daily pill containing 300 mg aspirin. The other group took a dummy pill containing no aspirin. The patients in each group were selected randomly so neither the doctors nor the patients knew who was being treated with aspirin. Of the 1200 men studied, 12% fewer of the men taking the aspirin had died of another heart attack compared with the other group. However, the difference between deaths in the two groups was not enough for the results to be statistically significant. This one study had not given convincing results for doctors to start using aspirin as a part of the treatment for heart attack victims. However, the combined results of further studies over the next 2 years provided large enough numbers to show that aspirin gave significant results. The evidence shows that this simple treatment prevents or at least delays many thousands of deaths a year.   3.1.1. What was the researcher’s aim? (2)
