Pleаse CAREFULLY REVIEW the cоurse grаding, аttendance, and assignment submissiоn pоlicy below:  GRADING PHILOSOPHY A note on grading: Just like you are disinterested in meaningless experiences and classwork, I am disinterested in exchanging “credit” for the substandard rote completion of assignments. This approach creates an economy of exchange centered on your ability to follow instructions and barter, rather than any meaningful assessment of your statistical competency. According to the principles of “andragogy,” adults learn best in a low-threat, interesting, and challenging environment. Therefore, I make use of a variation of specifications grading to assess your competency outlined in the student learning outcomes. Instead of keeping track of all the “points earned” on individual assignments over the semester, with arbitrary distinctions between a, b, c, d, and f, this approach sets all assignments as pass/fail (or, S/U, based on specific criteria that I give to you up front). In this approach, there is no partial credit awarded, but there is opportunity to revise and resubmit – more on that later. You can choose what level of engagement you’re able and willing to devote to the class because grades are based on satisfactory completion of a certain number of tasks assessing your ability to identify, read, apply, perform, and report basic social science statistics. The required components for each letter grade are outlined and described below. GRADE REQUIREMENTS Letter Grade and Description “Satisfactory” completion of: A: Genuine mastery of all student learning outcomes. Grades at this level reflect in-depth understanding and application of course material sufficient to continue studies in this field and beyond. 27/33 Module Exercise Problems 9/11 Module Quizzes 3/3 Data Analysis Reports >= 90% on Midterm and Final Exams B/B+*: Achievement of all student learning outcomes. Grades at this level reflect good understanding and application of course material sufficient to continue studies in this field. 24/33 Module Exercise Problems 8/11 Module Quizzes 3/3 Data Analysis Reports >= 80% on Midterm and Final Exams C/C+*: Baseline achievement of student learning outcomes. Grades at this level reflect decent understanding and application of course material sufficient to continue studies in college.     21/33 Module Exercise Problems 7/11 Module Quizzes 2/3 Data Analysis Reports >= 70% on Midterm and Final Exams D/D+*: Achievement of some student learning outcomes. Grades at this level reflect minimal mastery of course material.  19/33 Module Exercise Problems 6/11 Module Quizzes 1/3 Data Analysis Reports >= 60% on Midterm and Final Exams F: Insufficient achievement of student learning outcomes. Anything below “D” level. Notes: *I do not assign “minus” grades. “Plus” grades are given based on the completion of all bonus credit activities assigned throughout the semester (4/4).   GRADING INFORMATION Incompletes are only given under extenuating circumstances and at my discreti Students requesting an incomplete must have 80% of the course assignments completed and a passing course grade at the time of the request, which must be made before the 15th week of class. Grades and feedback for most Module Exercise Problems (e.g., 0 or 1) will be immediately available after the first attempt, for Module Quizzes (e.g., 0 or 1) within 1-2 days after the deadline, for Reports (e.g., 0 or 1) and Exams (--%) within ten working days. Rubrics will be provided. Grading errors must be brought to our attention within one week after the grade is posted. Outliers, excuses, missteps, etc. Life happens. Sometimes we forget to do our work, underestimate the time it takes to master certain skills, get sick, or are unable to perform our best. Here are the ways you will have some flexibility into the course: Work ahead: You may work ahead – modules are released one week in advance. Late work: All assignments, except exams, may be submitted/uploaded to Canvas up to two days late with no penalty and no questions asked for timely grading and feedback. Outlier tokens: You may make use of two (2) “outlier tokens” during the semester. These tokens are intended to help cover technological issues, sick days, events, etc. Each token can be used to request one of the following: A one-week extension on incomplete module assignments, the opportunity to revise and resubmit one set of graded module assignments, or a 10% increase on one exam score. Specific instructions on how to redeem outlier tokens are posted to Canvas. Any additional exceptions will require documentation as outlined by my Attendance and assignments submission policy listed below. NOTE: Technological failure, including Honorlock issues, are never acceptable excuses for late or incomplete wor Use a token if necessary. Any documents you upload to Canvas will be considered FINAL. Blank, corrupted, or erroneous uploads will be marked 0. Please double-check ALL uploaded files as I will make no exceptions for these cases. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION Attendance and assignments submission policy. You are expected to log in and submit your assignments each week. Below are my expectations regarding the timely submission of work. I must make every attempt to treat all students fairly, therefore, I maintain very clear boundaries around make-up work and academic performance. Below are my expectations: If you anticipate missing an assignment deadline (not the grace period) due to scheduled events, like military service, religious holidays, or university-sponsored events, it is your responsibility to send me your applicable documentation, along with a list of dates, affected assignments, and anticipated make-up dates by the second week of class and we will make arrangements in writing. These will not require the application of a token. If you miss, or anticipate missing, an assignment deadline (not the grace period) due to personal reasons, (e.g., a wedding, doctor’s appointment, a brief illness, life disruption, a breakup, a party, work, athletic practice, travel, or relocation) it is your responsibility to work ahead of schedule or request the application of a token. If you miss an assignment deadline (not the grace period) due to serious emergent events, such as you or your child’s illness or hospitalization, injury, deaths in the immediate family, consequences of severe weather, and other crises, it is your responsibility to notify me within one week afterward to make arrangements. In all cases related to injury or illness, a physician’s note excusing you from school during the assignment deadline dates, not just an appointment during those times, will be required. It is inhumane to request proof of death, so notification will suffice in those cases. After circumstances are reviewed, I will ask for you to sketch out a list of dates, affected assignments, and anticipated make-up dates. Most cases will not require the application of a token. OUTLIER TOKENS Requests must be made using Outlier Tokens Request Form You may make use of two (2) “Outlier Tokens” during the semester. These tokens are intended to help cover procrastination, tech issues, sick days, appointments, events, etc. Here are your options: A one-week extension on any/all assignments in a single module, including: Module Exercise Problems, Module Quiz, and the Data Analysis Report (if applicable). One-week extensions will provide you with an additional week to submit any incomplete assignments from a single module. Extensions can be requested in advance, or anytime through the MONDAY after assignments are due. This option is best for people going on planned personal trips, have a particularly busy week, who know they need time to complete long assignments, or those who run out of time during the grace period. For example, if you wanted an extension on the assignments in Module 3, you could make a request at any time through 11:59pm on Monday 2/13. That extension, no matter when you made the request, would have Module 3 assignments due by 11:59pm on Sunday 2/19. Extension requests can only be applied to assignments that have not been opened or attempted (e.g., unopened quizzes and reports with no uploaded documents). Retroactive or late requests will not be accommodated. The opportunity to revise and resubmit any/all assignments in a single module after grades/feedback have been posted, including: Module Exercise Problems, Module Quiz, and the Data Analysis Report (if applicable). This token will provide you with an additional week to revise and resubmit any truly completed assignments from a single Module after the grades and feedback have been posted. You can make this request up to two days after grades are posted and it will grant you one full week to revise and resubmit your work. This option is best for people who want the opportunity to improve an Unsatisfactory score using feedback from the instructor or TA. For example, let's say you want to improve the Data Analysis Project from Module 3. If the grades post on Wednesday 2/22, you can make the request any time through 11:59pm on Friday 2/24. You will then have through 11:59pm on the next Friday 3/3 to revise and resubmit the assignment to Canvas. Revise and resubmit requests can only be applied to completed assignments (e.g., quizzes with an attempt, Analysis Reports at least 1/2 completed). Retroactive or late requests will not be accommodated. A 10% increase on an exam score. This option will allow you to increase any one exam score by 10%. You can make this request at any time, for either exam, through the end of the semester (i.e., Week 15). You can even stack tokens for the same exam. This option is best for students who would need better exam scores to obtain a higher grade in the course. For example, if you are in the 14th week of class, and have not used a token yet, you could apply both tokens to the final exam, increasing whatever score you earn by 20%. Alternatively, you could retroactively apply one to your midterm score, increasing it by 10% and then one to your final exam score.  Exam score tokens can be requested at any time through the last day of the semester. If you find yourself with tokens by the end of term, just submit this application twice and apply both to the final.  IMPORTANT:  - We will honor the timestamp of this request.  - No need to send an email in addition to this request -- no explanation needed! - Please allow us 24-48 hours to adjust your Canvas settings.  - We will respond with a confirmation sent to your USF.edu email address.  - This application is considered final -- so use the tokens wisely!
