Dive Biology Terms Lesson 18

suspension – mixture where there is an uneven distribution of particles, ex:blood
genetics – science of heredity
interphase – normal cell activity
p680 – Reaction center chlorophyll in the photosystem II.
Plasmodesmata – channels between cells for transport
camouflage – A method of avoiding detection, through colors and shapes that help an organism blend into its surroundings.
Name 3 differences b/w plant and animal cells. – Plant cells have cell walls, animal cells do not.
Plant cells have chloroplasts, animal cells do not.
Animal cells have centrioles, plant cells do not.
fitness – Individuals whose inherited traits confer an advantage have a better chance of surviving in a given environment and will leave more offspring.
Mitosis: – cell division in which the nucleus divides into nuclei containing the same number of chromosomes; chromosomes become visible & spindles form
enzyme – protein that catalyzes chemical reactions for organisms.
Vitamin E serves as:
primary production – Amount of light energy converted to chemical energy by autotrophs.
cell cycle – the process in which the cell grows, replicates DNA, and divides to form daughter cells
Ozone – a colorless gas (O3) soluble in alkalis and cold water
nitrogen cycle – The transfer of nitrogen from the atmosphere to the soil, to living organisms, and back to the atmosphere.
hypothesis – An educated guess, based on preliminary research and broad ideas, that can then be tested and verified or not.
Vitаmin E serves аs:
codominance – pattern of inheritance where a heterozygote results in the expression of both alleles fully
sympatric speciation – Speciation without a divided population.
