El cine había nacido. El cortometraje – que solo duraba unos 46 segundos -- mostraba la salida de los trabajadores de la fábrica de fotografía Lumière y había sido producido con una máquina de la misma fábrica por Louis y Auguste, los hijos del dueño. "La gente buscaba en el cine lo mismo que buscamos hoy: estar juntos en una sala, compartiendo emociones", resume Thierry Frémaux, director del Festival de Cannes. Añade que el estreno había sido un éxito: pronto, más de 2.500 personas cada día pagaban un franco para ver el espectáculo. Los hermanos enviaron a operadores de cine a Moscú, Madrid, Nueva York, Tokio y Londres.
