P: WRITTEN PATIENT CONSENT OBTAINED: Electrоnic signаture оbtаined
CARIES CASE: Reаd аll the prоgress nоtes аnd infоrmation for this case and follow the instructions below. 31 points possible Your patient is a 61 year-old female who presented to the School of Dentistry through Admissions/IFC, for an adult prophy. She had oral cancer surgery and radiation in 2023 and stated she suffers from extreme xerostomia. She also takes Lisinopril for hypertension, which is controlled. She has dental insurance through her employer and only has a gap in her regular dental care because she had cancer. Your patient lives in Minneapolis. She drinks city water, brushes twice a day with over the counter fluoridated toothpaste, and flosses 1-2x/week. She doesn’t use any other oral self-care products. She has not had a professional fluoride treatment since she was a teenager. This is her first visit to a dentist since 2023 and she is ready to be back on a regular dental hygiene recall. To help relieve the dry mouth, she drinks lots of water but also sucks on sugared hard candy several times per day. After completing the full mouth probe, the dental student treatment planned for caries involving 16 surfaces. These lesions are cavitated, primary caries that are visible on the radiographs interproximally. Additionally, she has four decalcified/white spot lesions that are considered incipient. Periodontal Risk Assessment (PRA) is LOW. Radiographs indicated less than 10% generalized bone loss. As you examine the patient’s mouth you notice the mirror sticking to her cheeks. When you tell your patient about the caries disease process and the role of saliva in that process she is surprised and very motivated to try to reduce her caries risk factors. Complete all yellow highlighted sections.
